Open Concept

Open concept homes are all the rage today. I have some tips to help you “pull it all together” in your open floorplan.

Dining area in my open concept home

When we downsized to our “Open Concept Home” four years ago I had to make some adjustments. Our open floorplan reverse story and a half home consisted of the main floor - Kitchen, dining area, living area, master bedroom-bath and laundry room. And the basement -which included an entertainment area, two bedrooms with a shared bath and a powder room. All total it was 3875 square feet. Moving from a larger family home I was used to separate rooms for the formal dining and the formal living room. We spent most of our time in the combined kitchen/family room and casual eating area. I was able to decorate the formal rooms however I chose without regard to the rooms adjoining. In an open concept your eyes take in the whole room as soon as you walk in. Flow, color scheme and the amount of furniture used is so important!

Color Scheme:

I chose to use a neutral color scheme of off white and creams with dark wood accents for my furniture and rugs. This allows me to add pops of color and change out pillows ans accessories without interrupting the flow of the rooms. I am forever changing out my pillows!

Accessories:

Most of my accessories are white, silver or my beloved blue and white. I continue the same colors in the dining room and kitchen. This way they are interchangeable. I am able to change one space, making it look fresh, without having to change colors in the other spaces. I use larger accessories so that the space doesn’t look cluttered and I group them to tell a story.

Kitchen

Furniture:

When you are furnishing your open concept home remember - less is more! If you have too many small furniture your space will look cluttered and disorganized. You can see in the above photo the bar stools are tucked under the island for clear sight lines from the kitchen.

I hope you enjoyed these tips!
